Background: The surge in malaria cases and deaths in recent years, particularly in Africa, despite the widespread implementation of malaria-control measures could be due to inefficiencies in malaria control and prevention measures in malaria-endemic communities. In this context, this study provides the malaria situation report among children in three Municipalities in Northern Ghana, where Seasonal Malaria Chemotherapy (SMC) is implemented by Ghana Health Service (GHS). Methods: A cross-sectional household survey was carried out to assess the malaria knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) and malaria prevalence in 394 households in 13 rural communities in the Kumbugu, Nanton and Tolon Municipalities, Northern Region, Ghana. This was followed by screening for P. falciparum infection with anti-HRP2 RDT and PCR among children 1-17 years in the households. Plasma levels of IgG specific for crude P. falciparum antigen (3D7) and four recombinant malaria antigens (CSP, GLURP, MSP3, and Pfs230) were assessed by ELISA. The malaria and parasitaemia data were converted into frequency and subgroup proportions and disaggregated by study sites and demographic information of the participants. The ELISA data was converted to arbitrary units (AU) and similarly compared across study sites and demographic information. Results: The P. falciparum infection rate and frequency of malaria were high in the study areas with significant age-dependent and inter-community differences, which were reflected by differences in plasma levels of P. falciparum-specific IgG. Over 60% of households reported the use of bed nets and indoor insecticide sprays/coils, and 14% mentioned bush clearing around homes (14%) as malaria preventive measures. Community health centres were the preferred place for households (88%) to seek malaria treatment but over-the-counter drug stores were the major source (66%) of their antimalarials. Overall, malaria preventive and treatment practices were sub-optimal. Conclusions: P. falciparum infection and malaria are still high in the studied communities, indicating that preventive and control measures against the disease in the region remain inadequate. Efforts to ensure high SMC compliance and to improve preventative and treatment practices thus seem cost-beneficial "low-hanging fruits" in the fight against malaria in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Computer vision is the science that enables computers and machines to see and perceive image content on a semantic level. It combines concepts, techniques, and ideas from various fields such as digital image processing, pattern matching, artificial intelligence, and computer graphics. A computer vision system is designed to model the human visual system on a functional basis as closely as possible. Deep learning and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in particular which are biologically inspired have significantly contributed to computer vision studies. This research develops a computer vision system that uses CNNs and handcrafted filters from Log-Gabor filters to identify medicinal plants based on their leaf textural features in an ensemble manner. The system was tested on a dataset developed from the Centre of Plant Medicine Research, Ghana (MyDataset) consisting of forty-nine (49) plant species. Using the concept of transfer learning, ten pretrained networks including Alexnet, GoogLeNet, DenseNet201, Inceptionv3, Mobilenetv2, Restnet18, Resnet50, Resnet101, vgg16, and vgg19 were used as feature extractors. The DenseNet201 architecture resulted with the best outcome of 87% accuracy and GoogLeNet with 79% preforming the worse averaged across six supervised learning algorithms. The proposed model (OTAMNet), created by fusing a Log-Gabor layer into the transition layers of the DenseNet201 architecture achieved 98% accuracy when tested on MyDataset. OTAMNet was tested on other benchmark datasets; Flavia, Swedish Leaf, MD2020, and the Folio dataset. The Flavia dataset achieved 99%, Swedish Leaf 100%, MD2020 99%, and the Folio dataset 97%. A false-positive rate of less than 0.1% was achieved in all cases.

Background: Hypertension is a worldwide health issue that primarily affects the elderly in our society. However, in comparison to the developed world, the prevalence of hypertension is higher in Sub-Saharan Africa. Objective: This paper examines the prevalence of hypertension and its associated risk factors among older adults in Ghana. Methods: Using the World Health Organization's study on global AGEing and adult health (WHO SAGE) Wave 1 cross-sectional data collected via in-person structured interviews; paper and pencil interviews (PAPI) from ten administrative regions of Ghana using stratified multistage cluster design from respondents aged 50+ grouped by decade, this study analyzed a nationally representative sub-sample of 3,997 respondents employing binary logistic regression. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were used to estimate risk factors associated with hypertension (blood pressure ≥ 130/80 mm/Hg). Results: There was a 53.72% hypertension prevalence rate among older adults. Hypertension prevalence tends to increase with increasing age. The prevalence of hypertension was associated with residency (B = -0.18, OR = 0.84, p < 0.017), with urban residents being more at risk of hypertension than rural residents. The prevalence of hypertension increased with overweight (B = 0.66, OR = 1.94, p < 0.001) and obesity (B = 0.82, OR = 2.28, p < 0.001). The amount of fruit and vegetable intake was insignificant but had an inverse relationship with hypertension prevalence. Conclusion: This study has shown that demographic and lifestyle factors significantly affect and explain the hypertension risk among older adults. Medical factors, such as chronic diseases, were largely insignificant and accounted for less hypertension prevalence. Therefore, when interpreting test findings in clinical practice, such as hypertension, it is essential to consider demographic and lifestyle factors. In addition, health policies and primary interventions that seek to improve the standard of living, lifestyle, and wellbeing of older adults need to be critically considered moving forward to lower hypertension prevalence among older adults in Ghana.

The advent of the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the psychological well-being of many people. This study examined the relationship between fear of COVID-19, psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress) and coping strategies adopted by undergraduate students in Ghana. A sample of 209 students were recruited to complete online surveys on fear of COVID-19, psychological distress and coping strategies between June and July 2020. Students scored between normal to mild levels of psychological distress but above average scores on fear of coronavirus (M = 19.45, SD = 6.04). Fear of COVID-19 was positively related to psychological distress. Only maladaptive coping was found to be significantly and positively associated with fear of COVID-19. However post-hoc analysis of the components of coping strategies revealed that denial (ß = .17, p = .028), venting (ß = .18, p = .036) and humour (ß = -.18, p = .023; an adaptive coping strategy) were associated with fear of COVID-19. Finally, both adaptive coping and maladaptive coping strategies had a mediating effect on fear of COVID-19 and psychological distress. These findings emphasize the need to design and optimize institutional interventions that will assess psychological distress and fear of COVID-19 levels during this pandemic and provide psychotherapeutic support for students as they return to school.
